Some holiday traditions may not make our healthiest choice list (egg nog or holiday cookies, anyone?). However, there are many that offer us a great way to engage residents in workouts that support better cognitive performance, with intellectual stimulation, social connection, and opportunities to boost everyone\u2019s spirits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Here are 3 innovative, brain boosting workouts<\/span> you can easily fit into the calendar to help make this holiday season more memory-able for all \u2013 happy holidays from our TBH team to yours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13cff5571fcd133764114b920ca00d48\"><strong>Compliments Claus<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This no-prep, fast social workout is sure to boost everyone\u2019s spirits, as well as their speedy thinking, nimbleness, and verbal skills.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have students break into pairs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have them take 1 minute each complimenting their partner on one thing, such as their smile, their holiday sweater, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 When time is up, have students switch to new partners and repeat the workout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Continue until students have all partnered with each other or time is up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f2b786674dd6b79b721b8027a54ae422\"><strong>Winter Wonders<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Nourish those neurons with this fun, creative group poetry workout \u2013 perfect to share with family and the greater community once you are done! Trains attention, speedy thinking, nimbleness, verbal skills, memory, and executive control.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Write one of the Winter Wonders poetry prompts on a white board or flip chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have students take turns adding a line, word, or motion to the poem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Keep going until your group agrees the poem is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have fun reciting your Winter Wonders poem together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 If time allows, use additional prompts to create more Winter Wonders poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter Wonders Poetry Prompts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The cardinal, so red against the falling snow &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A path appeared across the snowy field, leading &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The pine-scented boughs lined the &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The holiday lights glimmered across the &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c9d98efa2683208d5b2d3015c378e7c0\"><strong>Holiday Ho-Ho-Hos<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Offer a bit of respite from the holiday high jinks with a break for some deep breathing and relaxation. Great for boosting perception, attention, coordination and emotional balance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have students sit comfortably, with their feet on the floor and hands resting in their laps. Invite them to close their eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Invite students to take several deep breaths, slowing the rhythm of their breathing with each breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 After a few rounds, invite students to add to their breathing by gently verbalizing \u201cho-ho-ho\u201d as they exhale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Do this for a few minutes together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Option to continue with additional verbal prompts as they exhale, such as \u201che-he-he\u201d and \u201cha-ha-ha.\u201d You can alternate between the verbal prompts for each exhale round as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Continue for as long as time allows.
